Homework Term 1

Homework Term 1

 Term 1 Weeks 2-10
        READING
        MATHLETICS
        WRITING RESPONSE
        WEEKLY GENIUS HOUR COMPLETION

READING
For homework this term I would like you to pick up a book and read it each night; take some time to read silently and also some time to read aloud to your parents.

Mums and Dad, Take some time to ask your children about what they are reading. Something that you can talk about with them is what connections do they make with the book. For example, have they had a similar experience to a character in the book or do they know someone who has. Is there a part in the story that reminds them of something in their life? Have they ever felt the same way as the character in the book? Is there a difference between the character in the book or events they have experienced? Or have they read another book or watched a movie that is similar to the one they are reading now? Are the characters similar to others from another book?

For more information on MAKING CONNECTIONS, read about it on the Reading Comprehension page on my Blog.

MATHLETICS
For Mathletics this term I would like the Year 5 students to complete their 10 tasks assigned to them in the Mathletics program.  Please don't do all 10 tasks at once. Spread out your tasks so you do a few each night. I will be keeping tabs of who completes their Mathletics each week and points will be allocated to those students who achieve a Bronze certificate each week.

WRITING RESPONSE- 4 week task
The writing response task is asking you to respond to a world current affair or local affair found in a newspaper delivered to you at home or on a newspaper publication found on the internet. A good example of one of these online newspapers is www.smh.com.au.  This task must be completed EACH WEEK - this means you will submit to me 4 newspaper responses at the end of 4 weeks. 1 of these responses will be presented to the class (you choose which one). It is up to you how you would like to present your response - using an iPad app, poster, PowerPoint etc.

To respond to a current affairs topic or an event you found in your local newspaper or online you can follow some of the guidelines listed below:
Prove you have read and understood what you have read
        Make opinions about the event
Express ideas about the event by saying what it made you think about or taught you – link it to life or other experiences where appropriate,
Support all your opinions with appropriate, specific evidence (quotations and details) found in the newspaper or online.
If you have any questions about this task please ask me and I will help you to understand the task and how to complete it.

Each week, 6 children will be asked to present their written response to the class.

WEEKLY GENIUS HOUR COMPLETION

Any work from your Genius Hour not completed in class may be completed at home as part of your weekly homework. This does not mean you finish ALL of your project, just the part you planned but did not finish in the hour at school throughout the week. Completed Genius Hour Work will also be presented to the class. Have fun with this. Be creative. Think outside the box. Genius Hour will start in week 2 and class presentations will start in Week 9.

    1. Aimee, your response to your pic of the day is to follow any form you'd like! You might like to write a Description of your photo, use your pic as inspiration for a Narrative or Recount, write an Explanation of how something works or a Procedure for how something is made. You could even use your photo to accompany a Letter or even an Invitation to an event! Use your imagination and enjoy snapping and writing :-) Entertain us with your creativity!!!!

    1. Abby, this is something Aimee showed me today...clever chickie that she is ;)
When writing in Notes, wherever you'd like your photo to be placed, you double click/touch the screen with two fingers and the option 'Insert Photo' will appear. Click on this option and then chose a photo from your gallery. Hope this helps? We can look at this more tomorrow :-)

    1. Jaime, your username is the same one you had last year. I printed out a list of our class' usernames and passwords today and they are hanging on our blue board in the front of our floor area. I won't post your username and password here as this is a public site. We can check it together at school tomorrow :-)

    1. Jasper, the writing response task asks you to read over articles from the news, whether it be local, state, national or world wide news. You may find these articles online or in newspapers. What we'd like you to do is show your understanding and reflections on the news articles as a written response. It's important that your reflection shows your understanding of the news article and your opinions or feelings towards the news item. One of the 4 articles you take a look at needs to be presented in a creative way to our class during weeks 7, 8, 9 or 10. We will be able to learn the news through you!
Hope this helps, Jasper? I can chat about it more with you tomorrow. Bottom line is, we simply want you to talk about a news item that was interesting to you and for you to be able to explain why it appealed to you.
